Making Sensor Observations Easy and Fun!

The goal of the SeaState project is to dramatically increase K20 STEM knowledge through experiential learning focused on the design, building and implementation of sensors in local marine systems. Through this effort students gain

  • skills and confidence in technology by constructing and programming their own environmental sensors using inexpensive microprocessors, sensor components, and PVC fittings.
  • basic understanding of how modern instrumentation for environmental sensing is constructed and operated;
  • core knowledge about marine environments directly impacting their communities;
  • real-life experiences to understand use of this technology strongly coupled with the scientific method to assess the environmental context of their own cultural and economic activities
  • analytical, evaluation, visualization and presentation skills of simple to complex data streams
  • sustained collaborative student-student partnerships within their own schools and across districts utilizing our web-based, interactive sensor network, student-driven database, and map interface.

We are striving to create a K20 sensor-building pipeline that provides a seamless progression from initial instruction in skills that students are motivated to learn, to explicit paths to colleges, universities and employment in coastal communities. We are currently partnering with the Olympic Educational Service District through a WA STEM educational award to mentor 35 teachers from 17 school districts on the Kitsap Peninusula in sensor building linked to investigation of local environmental phenomenon. We also have a long-term partnership with the Clallam Bay School that includes this project, as well as other STEM-engagement activities. We welcome partnering with local colleges and industries to grow these efforts.
